Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
