The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
