McDonald's has removed a Christmas advertisement made via AI after encountering significant online backlash.

The short spot was developed using AI-generated video and was originally uploaded online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, audiences online criticized the employment of AI in the commercial. A number of called it "creepy" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This incident serves as an important learning as we investigate the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," stated a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various situations that often go badly during the Christmas break, using the tagline "the most terrible time of the year".

The Movement of AI in Advertising

Commercials that incorporate AI tools have become a rising trend among major companies, particularly for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly launched back-to-back AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As segments produced with current AI video tools are more likely to become unstable the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also raised concerns about automation in the advertising industry, with some commenters noting it could reduce opportunities for actors.

Response from the Production Company

Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

Bridge claimed, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then edited during the edit "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the sentiment for other AI-generated campaigns has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, other businesses have also received backlash for employing AI in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some described as "cheap" and "disturbing".

The episode illustrates the ongoing conversation within the advertising and production industries about the balance between new tools and creative integrity.
