As any major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
